ขัน

n. 1. a bowl;

v. 2. to crow; 3. to tighten, to turn; 4. to compete, to wager, to gamble.

ขัน- a bowl, a cup usually used to hold water like a jug, with a matching smaller cup called จอก to drink from. If made of bronze, it's called ขันสัมฤทธิ์ (ขันสำริด). If it is finely turned and polished with stone, it is called ขันลงหิน. When it was used to carry betels, arecas, and dowry to the bride's home as a troth, it was called ขันหมาก. ขันหมาก also stood for the settlement demanded of the man by the bride's parents before marriage.ขันกว้าน (to wind by turning a capstan, the act of winding a rope around a stake to hold what is pulled or hauled in), ขันชะเนาะ (to twist a band of wire or rattan up tight by means of a stick), ขันเชิง (a large brass bowl with base permanently attached), ขันน้ำพานรอง (a middle-sized brass or silver covered bowl with a supporting stand, used for drinking water), ขันล้างหน้า (a wash-basin) ขันสู้ (to be an opponent in a race or competition, to challenge)
